Grand Final, Wooden Spoon Final, Inaugural Night Tennis Gift & Break Up Party

The season started in October 2013 and concluded last Tuesday on Grand Final night. Champagne finals tennis was played whilst the non-players watched, sat around the smoking brazier, ate from the BBQ and goodies table and chatted on a cool damp Adelaide Hills autumn night.

Premiers

The two top teams this season were Bushranges and Racqueteers and they played off in the Grand Final. It all came down the last set of the night with the winner of that set to win the premiership! With Pam overseas in NZ there was no sledging to distract the Bushranges but nevertheless the Racqueteers managed to win the final set in a nail biting tie break 13 points to 11, only to find that this meant the final had resulted in an exact draw with both teams on the same number of sets and games! Jacqui was heard to say “After all that!!!!” With no rules or precedents to cover a draw situation, in true night tennis fashion, we made up some rules and having noted that the Bushranges had been undefeated all year, the Bushranges were promptly  announced as the very worthy season winners. Bushranges – Aldgate Tennis Night Premiers 2013/14. Congratulations and well done. Photos of Life Member Greg Sparrow presenting his own team with the winners trophies.

Wooden Spoon Final

Team Grundfos (they were pumped – sorry) had the honor of playing the The Wolfies for the coveted wooden spoon. Grundfos stacked their team by enlisting presidential Paul Bartley unexpectedly at the last minute but it was the Wolfies who clearly played the better tennis and won the match on the night…. and thus LOST the wooden spoon. The standard of tennis was so high this year and also being that we are so politically correct at Night Tennis, the wooden spoon trophies this year were not made from wood, but from recycled sustainably grown bamboo. One winner of a traditional trophy was overheard admiring the wooden spoons saying “They are lovely, I wish we could have won one of those!” Ah… there is always next year. In the absence of Grundfos Team Captain, Tony, Tracy came forward to accept the wooden spoons on behalf of her Team.

Inaugural Night Tennis “Gift”

Who is our fastest and speediest night tennis player??? There was only one way to find out and with the lure of chocolate bar on offer as a prize we had four runners sign up initially to run. On the night however, overcome with athleticism and the numerous offers from non-runners for free massages, many more svelte athletes stepped up to the starting line and the white board was filled with runners’ names, times (on the left of each name) and the sports bet odds for each runner (to the right of each name).

gift-times-runners-and-betting-odds-jpg

Each runner was timed as they ran from Court 4 (touching fence and holding their tennis racquet) and weaved between the net posts, touched the fence on Court 1 before sprinting flat out to the finish line on Court 2 opposite the patio. Clearly the most important job was that of time keeper but where could we find someone with the necessary credentials and stopwatch skills? Well, how about a Justice of the Peace, a man who has actually held and run with the Olympic Torch on at least two occasions (this is true), someone who not only knows Tatiana Gregoriava but has held her “poles” (enviously I again tell you this is true), someone who understand tennis and athletics and someone who is also a venerable Life Member of our Aldgate Club? Would it ever be possible to find such a person? It was possible – Graham Davis! Graham stepped forward to do the time keeping, ably assisted by Sally. There were many notable runs, commendations go to the young crew who made the rest of us look old ie George, Lloyd, Josh and Abby. The most stylish runs were done by Lou (chased by her masseur) and Kate. Paul was powered by chocolate brownies and needed to be swabbed afterwards and Richard was heard to yell “I’m doing this for my son” as he dedicated his run. See his run: VIDEO HERE. The most pathetic effort was from Peter who didn’t put in enough effort and drew boos from the crowd as he strolled around the course however his motives were pure because he made Myles’ time look very good indeed. Despite all of this the winner of the inaugural Night Tennis Gift with a startlingly quick time of 14.77 seconds, was Tom (pictured below receiving his chocolate bar) with worthy runners up Jordan and Sean with blistering times in the 15 second range.

Thank you to everyone for a great fun season.  See you all again next season. Bye for now.

Congratulations – 14 Aldgate Junior Teams in the semi-finals!

Hi Team Managers,

Congratulations to everyone at Aldgate Tennis.  We have a total of 14 of our junior teams in the semi finals – all of our girls teams have made the semi finals.  What a tremendous effort, well done players, team managers  parents and coaches. Sorry about the long email but all of this information is very important.

Please find attached the teams and court allocations for our Semi- finals, starting this coming Friday night.  Please remember some of the matches as mentioned to you earlier this season are on this FRIDAY NIGHT. I have attached the code of conduct for finals.

Please remind parents, resting players and other spectators to:

  • Watch and enjoy the tennis
  • Not to call out any scores
  • Not to call any line calls
  • Not to talk to the players on court once play has started( any talking is considered as coaching and as such is not allowed)
  • Not to coach players once on court
  • To stay well back from the fence
  • Applaud good play from both teams equally
  • Remain firmly in the back ground and let the players enjoy the opportunity to play finals without interference from parents
  • One warning will be given – second offense results in forfeiture of player’s set

Players are to be reminded:

  • Call line calls clearly and honestly (if the ball can’t be called out then it is in. No points should be replayed due to uncertainty of a line call)
  • Call the score after every point and after each game has finished. It is the server’s responsibility to call the score
  • Play in accordance with all of the tennis rules, Code of Conduct and Tennis Aust Etiquette policies. This includes returning balls to the server, not returning the first serve it is a fault, no racquet abuse, ball abuse, verbal abuse and no foot faults. These are all seen as bad sportsmanship and can result in a warning, second offences can result in forfeiture of the set! If receiving be ready as soon as the server is ready- delaying tactics not allowed.
  • Do not walk behind a court when a point is in play- wait until the point has finished before retrieving the ball.
  • Close gates when entering/exiting the court – this is a safety issue.
  • Take their drink bottles and hats with them when they go onto the court

The weather forecast for Saturday is for showers. As there is only one match for Saturday morning you have all morning to finish the match. (or have played enough sets to get a result). You can stop play, wait for the rain to stop, squeegee the courts and continue play as many times as needed. If a result is not achieved Sat morning then the players need to come back to the same venue at 9am Sunday morning with the same players as listed on the scoresheet. If a set was in play when the match was called off, the score needs to be noted as play will resume from that score. Please ensure both teams know what the score is ( I would suggest writing it on both scoresheets prior to leaving the venue). If a player is not available on the Sunday morning, is listed on the scoresheet and hasn’t played their set/s then those sets are forfeited. No substitute player can be used even if the team has 5 players. It would be in everyone’s best interests to stay all Saturday morning rather than coming back on Sunday – I’m sure parents would prefer to only give up one morning of the weekend rather than both.

If the rain is really heavy and it is obvious that play can not continue then it is up to the court supervisor to call the matches off.  Team managers are to consult with the court supervisor prior to any decision being made regarding calling the match off.

Friday Night – Aldgate Tennis Club will have the canteen open and BBQ on for everyone to enjoy.

Saturday – Aldgate Tennis Club will have the canteen open and BBQ going, Heathfield High School will have some food available and Stirling Tennis Club will have a BBQ manned by Aldgate Tennis Club.

IMPORTNAT  – PLEASE ensure that players are at the courts on time…….

Friday Night by 6pm at the latest(play must start at 6.30pm) – please let  your team manager know if that will be a problem and we will see if we can help get your child there.  it would be advisable for players to have an early dinner if possible before they play.

Saturday by 8am (play must start at 8.30am) – remember if it is rained out play will resume on SUNDAY.

Please pass all of this information onto your team asap and if you have any questions please let me know, once again what a fantastic effort to all and good luck for the finals.  Enjoy!

GO ALDGATE!!!!!

Many thanks,

A large gum tree has fallen across the Aldgate Creek on Kemp Rd, crushing the front of the RSL building and blocking the RSL car park. The Aldgate Sports & Recreation Club facilities are undamaged.
