THE ALDGATE IGA.

We would like to make a special thank you to Anthony and the Team at our local IGA for their recent generous support of the Aldgate Sports & Recreation Club and for the fabulous food including yiros, bread, sausages and fresh vegetables etc that they supplied to help make our recent Gator Cup Tennis function such a success. Many thanks.

“Thank you”

2014 Gator Cup Wrap

The Club held its annual family fun evening on Sat 8th

All children and parents were split into four approximately even playing groups (Red, Green, Blue and Yellow). Despite this excellent organisation, one match was spotted with a 6 foot tall very old parent partnering and playing against three 2 foot tall children all under the age of 5, of course the kids won easily. Colourful doubles of mixed and varying standards was played until the (VERY LOUD) whistle blew and everyone swapped to new matches. This frenetic activity kept all the children fully occupied and the pace of games heavily cut into the socialising time  on the patio for the adults who of course carried over all the nonsense onto the courts. Most of the sledging was justified and humorous although some parents did suffer and required consoling beverages.

Midway through the Cup the Speed Serve Radar was produced for all to try. Ultimately, one of our young junior girls (with a lovely service action and a tremendous 43 km/h serve) was the recipient of the “chocolate bar”. Many of the boys, girls and parents took turns to slam down serves with the fastest legal serve of the night being a rather unremarkable 169km/h by an unremembered parent who destroyed two racquets in the attempts (I think Serena Williams serves faster than that left handed).

Meantime many were either producing food in the kitchen and BBQ or eating it and watching the waves of children running, playing tennis and generally having fun.

With the serving radar finished it was back to the action of the Cup and finally, after much rubbing out on the white board and after a session of heavy mathematics, the yellow team were declared the winners of the 2014 Gator Cup and players came forward to collect their prizes. Another team came runner up but let’s face it, who remembers the runners up?

A fun night was had and thank you to everyone who supported the night and I know that many Committee members put in extra special efforts with extra admin, chores, organising, food and cleanup etc. Well done by all.

A few pix of Night Tennis Xmas Party festivities.

Note: Jocelyn managed to serve all night without dislodging her antlers – a worthy effort.

Newest tennis recruit, baby Sebastian, was a first time hit.

Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your families…

Greetings…

Can you believe that it is the 16th of December today already!!!

Just a quick reminder, tomorrow night is our last Tuesday Night Tennis for 2013 and apart from tennis as usual, we will be having our annual Night Tennis Christmas Party drinks and nibbles.

Please simply bring a Christmassy plate of food to share (your choice of savoury or sweet).

The canteen will be open for cold soft drinks, lollies, sweets etc and please also feel free to BYO champas, beer, wine etc and stay on for a chat etc after tennis…

For those who have filled in through out the year or maybe aren’t listed to play tomorrow night, we would love to see you too, so please come down to the Club at any time during the evening.

Night Tennis resumes in the New Year on the 14th of January. Happy Christmas to all.

** Stop The Press **

In an extraordinary display of breath taking night tennis, Team “Just For The Fun Of It” tonight rolled over the top of an as yet unnamed and much more highly fancied opposition and achieved their maiden Team Victory.

Scorch marks on court one are still visible from where Sean’s Nikes melted onto  the court following his unrelenting display of high speed agility and endurance. Spectators were heard to whisper in admiration at these feats of unexpected athleticism, particularly from a man in his 40s. Andrea, having only taken up tennis for the first time this season was regularly seen flying through the air, particularly at Net, dismissively despatching all balls within reach with such force that several professional restringing companies have already approached the Club, sensing plenty of future business. Graham and Lisa, most often seen chatting inside the Clubrooms, this week did their best work out outside the Clubhouse and put on a fine display of competitive play with minimal sledging of their opponents and without a single code violation. So impressed were they by their own efforts that they asked me to write this article about them and post it on the web site.

So for their outstanding all around contribution tonight, demonstrating fortitude and an exemplary never say die approach as well as participating in an entirely justifiable self congratulatory post match celebration,  this week, TEAM JFTFOI are awarded the prestigious Night Tennis C’Mon Award for services to the cause of night tennis. Whilst most teams have no clue where they are on the ladder and where few players bother to check the team sheet at the end of play to find out if they won or not, JFTFOI has tonight simply cut through and publically celebrated their first Team win… Well done guys!!!
