Aldgate (Gator) Cup
2014 Gator Cup Wrap
The Club held its annual family fun evening on Sat 8th
All children and parents were split into four approximately even playing groups (Red, Green, Blue and Yellow). Despite this excellent organisation, one match was spotted with a 6 foot tall very old parent partnering and playing against three 2 foot tall children all under the age of 5, of course the kids won easily. Colourful doubles of mixed and varying standards was played until the (VERY LOUD) whistle blew and everyone swapped to new matches. This frenetic activity kept all the children fully occupied and the pace of games heavily cut into the socialising time on the patio for the adults who of course carried over all the nonsense onto the courts. Most of the sledging was justified and humorous although some parents did suffer and required consoling beverages.
Midway through the Cup the Speed Serve Radar was produced for all to try. Ultimately, one of our young junior girls (with a lovely service action and a tremendous 43 km/h serve) was the recipient of the “chocolate bar”. Many of the boys, girls and parents took turns to slam down serves with the fastest legal serve of the night being a rather unremarkable 169km/h by an unremembered parent who destroyed two racquets in the attempts (I think Serena Williams serves faster than that left handed).
Meantime many were either producing food in the kitchen and BBQ or eating it and watching the waves of children running, playing tennis and generally having fun.
With the serving radar finished it was back to the action of the Cup and finally, after much rubbing out on the white board and after a session of heavy mathematics, the yellow team were declared the winners of the 2014 Gator Cup and players came forward to collect their prizes. Another team came runner up but let’s face it, who remembers the runners up?
A fun night was had and thank you to everyone who supported the night and I know that many Committee members put in extra special efforts with extra admin, chores, organising, food and cleanup etc. Well done by all.
